Montana Trail (North end of the island, west of Rincon):

  • Time required: One to two hours round trip
  • Degree of Difficulty: 4 out of 10
  • Elevation: Slightly hilly
  • Distance: About 2 miles (3km) round trip
  • Guide Required: Recommended – The trailhead can be difficult to find.  Also, a guide is valuable as they can highlight the local flora and fauna, making the hike more enjoyable. You also don’t have to worry about accidentally wandering off and getting lost on some random side-trail.

The Trail-head is just west of the entrance to Echo Dos Pos Conservation Centre.  The trail takes you along the Conservation centre’s boundary, around a small hill and back, providing views of Washington Slagbaai National Park’s Goto Meer Lake and the Caribbean Sea.

  • Time required: Less than an hour round trip
  • Degree of Difficulty: 2 out of 10
  • Elevation: Negligible
  • Distance: Less than a mile (1.2km) round trip
  • Guide Required: Recommended – The trailhead can be difficult to find.  Also, a guide is valuable as they can highlight the local flora and fauna, making the hike more enjoyable. You also don’t have to worry about accidentally wandering off and getting lost on some random side-trail.

The trail starts just outside of Rincon at the north end of the island, just outside Ultamira Unjo.  The trail is partially shaded and has a gentle incline taking you to a rock formation with views of the surrounding area and Caribbean Sea.  There’s also a bench along the trail for relaxing and enjoying the view and weather.

Dos Pos Trail  (North end of the island, west of Rincon):

  • Time required: One hour round trip
  • Degree of Difficulty: 3 out of 10
  • Elevation: Slightly hilly
  • Distance: Approximately 2.5 miles (4km) loop trail
  • Guide Required: Recommended – The trailhead can be difficult to find.  Also, a guide is valuable as they can highlight the local flora and fauna, making the hike more enjoyable. You also don’t have to worry about accidentally wandering off and getting lost on some random side-trail.

The Trail-head is just north of the entrance to Echo Dos Pos Conservation Centre,  The pink markers loop around the rural community of Dos Pos and along Washington Slagbaai National Park’s boundary for views of Goto Meer Lake.

Bara di Karta Trail (Centre/East of the island near the capital Kralendijk):

  • Time required: Less than an hour round trip
  • Degree of Difficulty: 4 out of 10
  • Elevation: 200 feet (60m)
  • Distance: Less than a mile (1km) round trip
  • Guide Required: Recommended – The trail-head can be difficult to find.  Also, a guide is valuable as they can highlight the local flora and fauna, making the hike more enjoyable.

The trail-head is about 2.5 miles (4km) east of Kralendijk.  Birds and goats may be seen along the way…  The dirt trail has easy switchbacks to the top of the hill results in amazing views of most of the island.  To the north-east, you can see the Spelonk lighthouse on the east coast, looking west you can see Kralendijk and Klein Bonaire island, as well as the glistening salt lakes to the south.

Red Hill Trail (Centre/East of the island near the capital Kralendijk):

  • Time Required: One to two hours round trip
  • Degree of Difficulty: 4 out of 10
  • Elevation: Negligable
  • Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles (2km) loop trail

The trail-head is about 5 miles (9km) west of Kralendijk, just west of Plantation Washikemba.  The pink markers take you in a large loop through desert like terrain with views of the Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean.

Salt Flats Area (South / West area of the island)

  • Time required: As long as you want…
  • Degree of Difficulty: 2 out of 10
  • Elevation: Negligible
  • Distance: Variable
  • Guide Required: Not really, although a guide is valuable as they can highlight the local flora and fauna, making the hike more enjoyable.

The start of this walk is on the south-west coast of the island, about a half a mile (1km) south of Pink Beach, just off the main road where the preserved slave huts and obelisks are located.  You can walk along the beach or the road in either direction…  You should be able to see the glistening salt pans as well as flamingo pats (flocks) along the walk.
