Dominica – Travel Guide / Trip Planner

In order to relax and enjoy yourself on vacation, it’s best to know the basics of the island country you’re visiting.

The people of Dominica speak English, although some locals also speak Antillean Creole and/or Kokoy among themselves – both are French based Patois-like dialects.

The main currency on the island is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar, although the US dollar is also widely accepted.

For those planning to rent a car, please remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road in Dominica.

Please note that the Dominica electrical power system provides 220volt AC to European style 3-prong outlets, so adapters/converters and surge suppressors (to handle the occasional dirty power) are required by North American visitors.

Dominica falls in the Atlantic Time Zone, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time (for North Americans) and four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

When is the best time to travel to Dominica?

In terms of the weather, the best time to vacation on the island can be anywhere between January through April, with February/March being the sweet spot. These months typically have the least amount of rain and the daily average temperature ranges comfortably from a low of 72˚ (22˚c) to a high of 84˚ (29˚c) degrees. It’s much hotter and more humid, with much more rain later in the year. The chance of a Tropical Storm or Hurricane hitting Dominica is possible anytime between June and November, with August – October being the most risky. It is prudent to watch the weather conditions a week or two in advance of your travel plans to ensure it is safe to travel late in the year.
