You can find enjoyable and easy-to-access snorkeling sites at a number of locations along the northern and the southwest coasts of the island. Slip into the warm Caribbean sea and snorkel right off the beach, climb down a short ladder or take a boat ride out to reefs and shipwrecks close to shore. Snorkeling can be enjoyed off the shores of the main tourist destinations, including Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay.
The shallow reefs along the shores of Negril offer a variety of coral, tropical fish and other marine life, which can all be experienced in clear, calm waters – Half Moon Beach, Bloody Bay, Booby Cay Island, Middle Shoal (7 Mile Beach) Reef, and Negril’s West End are all great places for snorkelers to explore the colourful marine life of Jamaica. Montego Bay Marine Park, which encompasses the main bay as well as the Bogue Lagoon and Airport Point, offers some rewarding coral reefs to explore – Fish Pond Reef and Riu Garden have plenty of fish and other marine life to see in this protected area. Most resorts in the area offer boat rides to the nearby reefs, which are shallow enough for snorkeling. You can snorkel right off the beach at Doctor’s Cave Beach, one of Montego Bay’s busiest hotspots, as well as nearby Cornwall Beach.
Ocho Rios also has a Marine Park that is home to a wide variety of sea creatures. Good snorkeling can be found right from shore, and local boat operators will take you out to nearby Devil’s Reef for an even better underwater experience. There’s also easily assessed snorkeling from the beaches of nearby Runaway Bay, where a wide variety of tropical fish and marine life can be found at Cardiff Hall Beach as well as North Coast Beach.
Perhaps the best Jamaica snorkeling, away from the crowds, is at Long Reef on the south coast of the island, between Black River and Treasure Beach.
