No adventurous trip to Saint Kitts is complete without hiking up Mount Liamuiga (formerly Mount Misery), the island’s highest peak at 3,792 feet (1,156 m) above sea level.  Combined, Saint Kitts and Nevis have half a dozen mountainous peaks above 1,500 feet (500m), along with numerous other trails.

Challenging St. Kitts hiking trails are in the central / west part of the island (click on the links below for more info):

  • Mount Liamuiga Hike (north end of island)
    • Challenging
    • About 5 miles (8km) round trip requiring 3–5 hours
    • Great hike with rooty terrain and steep sections
  • Dos D’ane Pond Hike (Verchild’s Mountain)
    • Very Challenging
    • Over 6 miles (10km) long requiring 4 to 6 hours. Rewarding rainforest mountain hike to a large pond and waterfalls with great island views along the way. The last gully/ghut section is very steep and muddy.
  • Radio Tower Hike (near the town of Boyd’s)
    • Intermediate
    • 2 miles (3km) requiring 3-4 hours. Steep hike up a partially paved road

    • 1 to 3 hour (partial) loop trails along Wingfield River Valley, with optional ridge climb
  • Military Trail

    • 3 to 5 hours one way. Historic trail from one side of the island to the other through the Central Forest Reserve from Old Road Town to Phillips Village/Molineux Grounds.
  • Bat Cave and Waterfall Hike (west side near the town of Challengers)
    • Intermediate
    • 4-6 hours round trip including a visit to the cave and waterfalls
  • Timothy Hill
    • Easy – Intermediate
    • Short (20 min) walk up an old concrete road to the highest point on the Southeast Peninsula with the best views in St. Kitts.
  • Phillips Rainforest Hike (east side near Phillip’s Village)
    • Easy
    • 2 hour loop trail through a rain-forest valley
  • Brimstone Fortress
    • Easy – Intermediate
    • Nice forest hike to a look-out above the fortress
  • Monkey Hill

    • 1 hour path up a hill next to the airport providing nice view of Basseterre and surrounding area

Also of interest is the Carib Petroglyphs near Old Road Town, on the west coast just north of the town of Challengers. There are no long-distance backpacking trails on St. Kitts.
