A great Caribbean island for hiking, Saint Kitts and Nevis offer a variety of easy relaxing walks as well as some very challenging hikes.

No adventurous trip to Saint Kitts is complete without hiking up Mount Liamuiga (formerly Mount Misery), the island’s highest peak at 3,792 feet (1,156 m) above sea level.  Combined, Saint Kitts and Nevis have half a dozen mountainous peaks above 1,500 feet (500m), along with numerous other trails.

Challenging hikes on St. Kitts are in the central / west part of the island:

  • Mount Liamuiga Hike (north end of island)
    • Challenging
    • About 5 miles (8km) round trip requiring 4–6 hours
    • Great hike with rooty terrain and steep sections
  • Dos D’ane Pond Hike / The Mansion Source Trail (Near Romney Manor)
    • Intermediate
    • Approximately 3 miles (5km) requiring 3-5 hours
    • Varied hike on Verchilds Mountain
  • Radio Tower Hike (near the town of Boyd’s)
    • Intermediate
    • 2 miles (3km) requiring 3-4 hours
    • Steep hike up a partially paved road

Other great hikes on St. Kitts: 

  • The “Valley of Giants” Rainforest Hike (west side near Romney Manor)
    • Easy
    • 2 hour loop Trail along Wingfield River Valley, with optional ridge climb
  • Bat Cave and Waterfall Hike (west side near the town of Challengers)
    • Intermediate
    • 4-6 hours round trip including a visit to the cave and waterfalls
  • Southern Peninsula Hike (south end near Frigate Bay)
    • Easy – Intermediate (Depending on distance/duration chosen)
    • 4-6 hours round trip
    • Unique ‘dry scrub-brush’ trail with access to empty beaches / ocean views
  • Phillips Rainforest Hike (east side near Phillip’s Village)
    • Easy
    • 2 hour loop trail through a rain-forest valley

Also of interest is a short 1 hour hike to see Carib Petroglyphs near Old Road Bay, on the west coast just north of the town of Challengers.

There are no long-distance backpacking trails on St. Kitts, although ‘Old Military Trail’ crosses the Island, from Romney Manor to Phillip’s Village.

The most challenging and popular hike on Nevis:

  • Nevis Peak
    • Intermediate
    • Over 2 miles (3km) requiring 4-5 hours
    • Iconic hike with spectacular views from the top

There are other relatively short (2-3 hour) ‘intermediate’ level hikes on Nevis as well, such as the Golden Rock Nature Trail and the Devil’s Copper and Waterfall hike.

    • Sulphur Springs Hike – Experience the sulphur spring volcanic vent in Westbury Village while viewing the farms and breathtaking vistas of St. Kitts southeastern peninsula on this 2 hour hike
    • Jessups Rainforest Hike – Explore one of the few remaining primitive rainforest valleys on the lower slopes of Nevis Peak on this 2.5 hour hike
    • Saddle Hill – Experience a leisurely 2 hour hike along scenic trails with great views
