A great island in the Caribbean for scuba diving, Jamaica offers over a hundred dive sites around the island. The island features a narrow fringing coral shelf close to shore along most of the north coast. Runaway Bay is home to one of 2 re-compression chambers on the island. There are a number of dive sites off the shores of Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay, featuring a colourful reef along with walls and wrecks (ship and airplanes) to explore. The best Jamaica diving sites near Runaway Bay / Discovery Bay include:
Reggae Queen
- This popular dive site has a max depth of 60 feet (18m) and features a sunken 100 foot long tugboat on a sandy bottom near two reefs. Schools of fish can be seen around the wreck, and sponges and the occasional ray can be seen near the reefs.
Pocket’s Reef
- This popular dive site for advanced divers, has a max depth over 200 feet (60m) and features a plunging wall covered with sponges and sea-fans. A variety of fish can be seen on the reef as well as down the wall.
Canyon
- Another deep dive site for advanced divers with a max depth of over 130 feet (40m), this amazing site features steep parallel walls 20 feet (6m) apart with schools of fish
Planes
- This interesting dive site, for advanced divers, has a max depth over 150 feet (45m) and features two sunken aircraft at 75 feet (23m) right next to a plunging wall. Turtles and large fish can be seen near the wreck and down the wall.
Groupers Drop
- This deep dive site, recommended for advanced divers, has a max depth of over 120 feet (35m) and is a good spot for drift diving
Nursery
- This shallow dive site has a max depth of 30 feet (9m) and is a good spot for underwater photography and night diving
Spanish Anchor
- This dive site has a max depth of over 125 feet (40m) and features an anchor at 50 feet (15m) with it’s chain dangling invitingly over the wall
