The people of Barbados speak English, albeit with a unique drawl-like accent.

The main currency is the Barbados dollar (bds), although the US dollar is also widely accepted.

For those planning to rent a car, please remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road in Barbados. That said, Barbados has a good public transit system – There are two government-run bus lines as well as a number of private mini-vans that can get you around cheaply.

Please note that the islands’ electrical power system provides local residents with a 110-115 Volt AC (50hz) supply, with Type A and Type B outlets. This means that power ‘adapters’ or ‘converters’ are typically not required by North American travelers.

Barbados falls in the Atlantic Time Zone, four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. Note that the island does not observe daylight savings time, so during the spring & summer months, the time will align with North Americans coming from the Eastern Time zone.

When is the best time to travel to Barbados?

In terms of the weather, the best time to vacation in Barbados may be anytime between February and May as this is when there’s the lowest chance of rain. The temperature in Barbados is fairly constant throughout the year. The daily average temperatures in February through May range comfortably from a low of 73˚ (23˚c) to a high of 85˚ (29.5˚c) degrees. It’s more humid and with a higher chance of rain later in the year. While hurricanes rarely get too close to Barbados, the heaviest part of the rainy season, as well as the greatest rick of a tropical storm, is typically between August and October. It is prudent to watch the weather conditions a week or two in advance of your travel plans to ensure it is safe to travel late in the year.
