With Hispaniola to its west and the Virgin Islands located to the east, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is situated roughly in the middle of the Caribbean, separating the Greater from the Lesser Antilles islands. While Puerto Rico is small relative to some other islands of the Greater Antilles, it is massive in size when compared to the more southerly islands of the Lesser Antilles. Puerto Rico is roughly 142 miles (229km) long and 45 miles (73km) wide, covering an area of approximately 5,324 sq miles (13,790 sq km).

While Puerto Rico is a Territory of the USA, centuries of Spanish rule have left major influences on the culture and architecture of the island. Puerto Rico is probably best known for being the birthplace of the Pina-Colada, as well as for the charming town of old San Juan, with its massive 16th-19th century Spanish fortresses, including La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site, a World Heritage Site. If you’ve ever been there and have stayed outside of Puerto Rico’s major cities, the island is probably most memorable for being home to the “coqui” frogs, which can be near deafening and are heard all night long.

Although a major tourist destination in the Caribbean, few travelers experience the natural beauty of the mountainous island. Puerto Rico contains over 20 State Forests / Parks, including the Guánica Dry Forest – A United Nations recognized Biosphere Reserve. The island also has two Bio-luminescent bays, several subterranean caves as well as over 300 miles (500 km) of coastline! The Puerto Rico Trench, situated north of the island, is the largest and deepest trench in the Atlantic Ocean and the Territory also includes a number of small islands off both it’s eastern and western shores… All this makes Puerto Rico a great vacation spot for enjoying a long list of outdoor activities. A Puerto Rico vacation has plenty to offer travelers seeking action on land and sea.
