For some of the Caribbean’s best hiking, visit Martinique‘s South End. The area offers a variety of nice relaxing walks as well as some more challenging, mountainous (volcano) hikes. Hiking is a great way to explore the natural beauty of the island, and many Martinique hiking trails provide amazing panoramic views of the island and the Caribbean Sea from hill-top look-outs or coastal trails.

The best Martinique hiking trails at the South End of the island include:

  • Morne Champagne – Anses d’Arlet
    • Easy: 1 hour, 2 miles (3km) (return) with little change in elevation
    • Trail transitions from a dry forest with gum trees and cacti to a rainforest-like environment at the peak, ending at Grande Anse beach. Option to continue to Anse Dufour then Anse a l’Ane (an additional 3 hours and 7 km).
  • Morne Larcher
    • Intermediate: 1-3 hours, 2.5 miles (4km) (return) with a 1,300 (400m) vertical
    • Spectacular panoramic views of the island and Caribbean sea
  • Taupiniere to La Cherry
    • Easy: 3 hours, 5 miles (8km) (one way) with little change in elevation
    • Coastal trail to the town of Diamant traverses a dry forest and mangrove featuring great views of Morne Larcher and the Caribbean Sea.
  • Piton Creve-Coeur
    • Easy: 1.5 hour, 1 mile (1.5km) (one way) with 500 feet (150m) vertical
    • Trail through a dry forest with cacti, as well as a small pond, leads to a small park at the top of the hill with decent views of the town of Le Marin as well as the southern part of the island
  • Trace des Caps
    • Walk any part of this 21 mile (34km) coastal trail between Macabou (south of Le Vauclin) and Ste-Anne.
  • Ilet Chevalier (Lizard Island) Loop Trail
    • Easy: 1 hour, 1.5 miles (2.3km) with little change in elevation
    • 500m from shore, the island is accessible by boat or kayak and features beaches and plenty of birdlife.
  • Foret Vatable (Just east of Les Trois Ilets)
    • Easy: An hour or two criss-corossing a network of trails
    • Well maintained wide paths through forest alongside mangroves and Baie de Fort De France
  • Morne Gommier
    • Easy: Less than 1 hour, 2 miles (3km) return
    • One of the most-visited sightseeing destinations on the island
