Antigua Caves & Barbuda Caves – Locations, Guides & Tour Operators
Looking to escape the ever-present sun? If so, journey underground to a world of natural subterranean limestone caverns, where eerie stalagmites, stalactites and flow-stones dominate the scenery. Antigua & Barbuda have plenty of sea caves and caverns worth exploring – Some are accessible by tourists, while others are for more serious spelunkers. There are caverns with bats as well as petrogyph paintings on the walls.
Be safe and sure when visiting Antigua & Barbuda – Have a local guide show you the best caves on the island. Local Guides and Tour Operators are listed below.
The best Barbuda caves include:
Just beyond the pink sand beaches of the north-east shore of Barbuda, Two Foot Bay Cave is home to bats, crabs, iguanas and birds. Light beams illuminate parts of the cave through narrow crevices in the rock. Ancient petroglyphs can be seen on the cave walls.
Take a 3 mile (5km), 40 minute walk from Burbuda’s main town of Codrington and you’ll encounter an absolutely amazing site. Darby Cave is a massive sinkhole, over 300 feet (90m) in diameter, complete with it’s own forest, crowned by long stalactites, over 65 feet (20m) below the surface.
For a more adventurous Barbuda caving / spelunking experience visit:
Dark Cave is another couple of miles (3km) further south of Darby Cave. This bizarre grotto is filled with water – Bats as well as blind shrimp call this underground pond, that’s always ‘in the dark’, home.
Another cavern on the island that contains petroglyphs is the rarely visited Indian Cave.
