Barbados Caves – Locations, Guides & Tour Operators
Looking to escape the beach and the heat of the mid-day sun? If so, take some time to visit a Barbados‘ cavern or sea cave – Journey underground to a world of natural subterranean limestone and coral caves, where stalagmites, stalactites and flow-stones dominate the scenery. Barbados has a cavern big enough for an electric tram and another that you can swim in! There’s something for everyone if you know where to look – Local Guides and Tour Operators are listed below.
The best Barbados caves include:
Harrison’s Cave
Opened in the early 1980s, Harrison’s Cave is absolutely stunning. The cave system, located near the centre of the island, has more than a mile (2km) of tunnels, as well as streams and deep pools of water. The Great Hall is a massive cavern, almost 50 feet (15m) tall, complete with limestone stalactites, stalagmites and flow-stones as would be expected. Guided tours of Harrison’s Cave can be done via a comfortable Electric Tram, by foot (Walk-In Cave Tour) or you can join an Eco-Adventure Tour that includes a hike to the cave. There’s also a Visitor’s Centre to view local artifacts and enjoy some snacks.
Animal Flower Cave
Located at the most northern tip of Barbados, this natural sea cave has large underground windows that open to the Atlantic ocean! Named after the ‘anemone’ creature that resides in the caverns’ pools, Animal Flower Cave also has a deep subterranean pool for swimming in, as long as the waves behave. Above the Caves, there are spectacular views of the rugged coastline and the facility also has a top-notch restaurant perched on the edge of the cliffs.

Cole’s Cave
Likely a remote part of the Harrison’s Cave system, the un-commercialized Cole’s Cave is rarely visited by tourists. The cave system consists of a few 10 feet (3m) tall and wide caverns that are relatively dark and are decorated with natural stalagmites and stalactites. The subterranean caverns also has small streams and pools of water.
Welchman Hall Gully
This collapsed cave system is geologically connected to Harrison’s Cave. While there is no ‘underground’ per se, a few flow-stone structures can be seen under the cliff-like walls of the gully. This jungle area provides a glimpse of what the island looked like prior to its 17th-century colonization. The reserve is home to dozens of individual plant species, some indigenous and some imported, as well as the famous Barbados Green Monkeys.
