As one of the original rum producing Caribbean islands, Jamaica is home to a large variety of rums – The island probably makes over a 100 different rums… Some are dark/navy style rums reminiscent of old Port Royal’s privateer and pirate days, some are the popular over-proof white rums, while others are well aged and refined with a dry/oaky flavour – Jamaican rum is typically known for a unique pungent or “funky” characteristic. There’s something for everyone on this island!

Wray and Nephew

Famous for it’s Wray and Nephew white over-proof rum, the company also produces J. Wray Gold and J. Wray Silver rums.
Other brands produced by Wray and Nephew include: Koco Kanublend (aged white rum steeped with coconut flavour); CocoMania (coconut flavoured liqueur) and Charley’s JB Over-proof
Chris Blackwell, Jamaican native and international music icon (of Island Records fame), created Blackwell Black Gold rum, a complex dark spirit.

Appleton Estates

The oldest Jamaican sugar estate / distillery – In continuous production for over 265 years!
Produces over a dozen rums… Special Gold; White, Dark and V/X along with a number of aged (8yr, 12yr, 21yr and 50yr) rums as well as blends (Reserve, Signature and Master) plus various special/limited editions
Edwin Charley, a high-end brand, sold in hand-blown Venetian glass bottles with caricatures inside, is also produced by Appleton Estates and include: Enlightenment (aged); Virtue (extra old); Foundation (white); and Transformation (white)
The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience offers a visitor center, a small museum, sugar cane fields, and offers tours which include a short film, a guided tour of the facilities, as well as product sampling.

Coruba

Known for their dark Planter’s style rums
Produces a variety of rums including: Original Dark Rum (aged 2 years), Spiced, Coconut, Mango, Pineapple flavours along with Gold, Dark and Aged (12yr, 18yr, 25yr) rums

Hampden Estate [SUST-ECO]

One of the oldest sugar estates in Jamaica, Hampden believes that “environmental stewardship is the life blood of the distillery” – From it’s use of re-cycled steel and water within the facility, to it’s low energy consumption, Hampden is working towards being the first distillery on the island with a zero carbon footprint.
It’s signature ‘Smith and Cross’ Navy Strength Rum is a 2 year old blend with a typical Jamaican funk
Other products include Rum Fire (over-proof) and Hampden Gold (for the UK and Europe)
The Hampden Rum Tour offers guided tours into the distillery (circa 1753) and allows access to the estate grounds

Sangsters produces Jamaica Rum Cream, a blend of rum, cream and local fruits and spices

Worthy Park Estates

Winner of dozens of awards from international spirit competitions
Produces a number of white, over-proof and aged (some with special finishing cask) rums, as well as a variety of vintage rums under the Mezan brand.
Produces the Rum-Bar brand which includes an Over-proof rum, a Gold (4 yrs) rum along with a Rum Cream
The Worthy Park Estate Visitor Center and Tour offers a virtual tour of our sugar plant and a walking tour of the distillery and other facilities along with rum tasting.

Money Musk Plantation

One of the island’s oldest sugar estates, currently providing molasses to the National Rums of Jamaica Limited (used by a number of rum producers)
Producers of the Monymusk brand and their rums which includes: Over-proof; Special Gold (1 yr); Classic Gold (3-5 yrs); Special Reserve (>10 yrs) as well as Whispering Breeze (a coconut based liqueur)
Also produces the Royal Jamaican brand which includes: White, Gold, Blackstrap Dark, an Aged (10yr) rum as well as two Spiced rums (White & Red).

KRB Lea Jamaica Rums, produces the following brands:

Port Royal: Silver; Bronze (young aged blend); Amber (aged blend); Gold (3-5 yrs) and a White Over-proof rum
Lion Pride White Over-proof Rum
Tropix: Guava, Coconut, Mango and Banana flavoured rums

Myers Rum Company

It’s signature Original Dark Rum (Planters Punch) is a full bodied aged dark rum. They also produce a Platinum White rum.

Smatts

The distillery, named after the pirate Black Jack Smitts, has been producing rum for hundreds of years, utilizing Blue Mountain mineral water and locally sourced molasses
Produces a Gold (aged/blended) rum and a Silver rum

Private Selection

Produces high-end rums: Straight from the Cask; Blend 15; Blend 17 and Blend 18

Hansen (A German Distillery blending their own Jamaican rum)

Produces: Golden (over-proof); Blue; and President (Named after Reich President Hindenburg) rums

Navy Island (A Dutch company)

Produces Navy Island XO Reserve, a blend of aged Jamaican rums

Kudjoe (An Australian company utilizing a small boutique distillery on the Island)

Produces a White (aged 2 yrs), Gold, and Spiced (with pimento and other Jamaican spices)

Of course, numerous rum companies around the world use Jamaican rum in their “collections”, such as the Berry’s and Plantation series, while countless others use Jamaican rum in their own blends – Most notably, Captain Morgan.

In case you didn’t have a chance to pick-up a bottle on your trip, it’s good to know that there’s a great duty free shop at Sangster International Airport that offers a large selection of local rum products.
