St. Thomas is the capital and arguably the most popular of the US Virgin Islands. A relatively tiny island, St. Thomas is about 12 miles (20km) long and no more than 3 miles (5km) wide, covering 32 square miles (83 sq km) – A little smaller than Florida’s Walt Disney World! Part of the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles Leeward Islands, St. Thomas is situated east of Puerto Rico and right next to the British Virgin Islands. The island is fairly mountainous and has a number of natural harbours and lagoons making it ideal for water sports and a day at the beach. Visitors can also count on a magnificent underwater escape while exploring the island’s off-shore reef system.
Famous for it’s busy cruise port and duty-free shopping, the island St. Thomas displays it’s Danish heritage well with it’s distinctive architecture seen at a number of castles, churches, forts, sugar mills and plantation houses. With it’s American culture, English speaking community and use of the US dollar, St. Thomas is convenient Caribbean destination for American tourists.
