Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, the Commonwealth of Dominica is one of the Lesser Antilles’ Windward islands. With Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south, Dominica is one of the larger southern Caribbean Islands, covering approximately 290 square miles (750 sq km) of lush green rain-forest. With 9 of the Caribbean’s 16 active volcanoes, Dominica is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles with visible geothermal/volcanic activity. This can be experienced first-hand at the second-largest thermally active “hot spring” in the world, Boiling Lake. Famous for it’s extreme mountainous landscape and plentiful waterfalls, Dominica travel is a “hiker’s dream” and also a very popular spot for snorkeling, canyoning and scuba diving.
Dominica is known as the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean” for good reason – Probably the last major Caribbean island to retain most of its unspoiled natural beauty. The island maintains an extensive natural park system including Cabrits National Park, Northern Forest Reserve, Central Forest Reserve, as well as Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a tropical forest blended with scenic volcanic features recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dominica is also preserving life in the water with marine parks such as the Soufriere-Scott’s Head Marine Reserve (photo at top of page).
