Grenada – Travel Guide / Trip Planner
In order to relax and enjoy yourself on vacation, it’s best to know the basics of the island country you’re visiting.
The people of Grenada speak English, although some Caribbean Patois or Creole may also be heard.
The main currency used in Grenada is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar, although the US dollar is also widely accepted.
For those planning to rent a car, please remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road in Grenada. Reliable public transit is also available via mini-buses that travel to/from most places on the island.
Please note that the islands’ electrical power system provides a 220 Volt AC (50hz) supply via a British style 3-prong outlet. This means that power ‘adapters’ and/or ‘converters’ for some appliances/electronics, along with surge suppressors (to handle the occasional dirty power) may be required by North Americans.
Grenada falls in the Atlantic Time Zone, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time (for North Americans) and four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. Note that the islands do not observe daylight saving time, so during the summer months, the time will be unchanged for North Americans coming from the Eastern Time zone.
When is the best time to travel to Grenada?
The best time to vacation to Grenada in terms of weather is probably January through May. The daily average temperatures range comfortably from a low of 71˚ (21˚c) to a high of 88˚ (31˚c) degrees. It’s a little warmer, and quite a bit more humid, with a higher chance of rain during the second half of the calendar year. As the southernmost of the Windward Islands, Grenada sits just on the edge of the most common hurricane corridor, however the chance of a Tropical Storm or Hurricane hitting Grenada is possible anytime between June and November, with August – October being the riskiest. It is prudent to watch the weather conditions a week or two in advance of your travel plans to ensure it is safe to travel late in the year.
Please note that regular ferry service connects Grenada with the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Island hopper flights between Grenada and Carriacou are also available.
