It’s more than just a cliché – The Cayman Islands are truly a Diver’s Paradise! The ‘West Coast’ of Grand Cayman has over 50 dive sites, including spectacular walls, canyons and swim-through arches and tunnels. There’s also shallow reefs with plenty of coral and marine life. Of course there’s the famous 251 foot, 5 deck USS Kittiwake wreck to explore as well!

In Grand Cayman’s North Sound area there are over 40 dive sites including the Cayman Barrier Reef with its gorgeous aquatic gardens, a deeper version of Stingray City as well as the epic North Wall – plunging steeply thousands of feet into the deep blue abyss! You’ll enjoy the wide variety of marine life off this side of the island.

Amazingly, Grand Cayman’s more remote and less visited ‘East End’ is home to over 50 dive sites – That means un-populated dives along the east wall in pristine coral canyons and valleys in the company of plenty of large tarpon! Then there’s Grand Cayman’s ‘South Side’ – Over 30 dive sites can be found on the oft-forgotten end of the island. Snorkeling at it’s Best

With several vibrant coral reefs all around Grand Cayman, it’s a great place to explore an underwater world in calm seas with amazing visibility. You can slip into the warm Caribbean Sea from a local beach, or take a short boat ride to some of the best Grand Cayman snorkeling spots a little further from shore. There are sunken ships and wrecks that sit in as little as 20 feet of clear blue water.

Grand Cayman’s ‘North Sound Marine Park’ is home to some incredible snorkeling sites, including a large barrier reef and a number of lush gardens. You’ll be able to see fascinating corals, sponges and sea fans as well as tropical fish, rays, eels and even conch and lobster. Besides Stingray City, there’s also Starfish Point, a beach area where the sandy bottom, in just a few feet of water, is home to… you guessed it, Red Cushion Starfish!

The popular West Coast of Grand Cayman also has a number of awesome snorkeling sites, including the Kittiwake Shipwreck, a former US Navy vessel. The depth of the ship ranges from 15 feet (5m) to 60 feet (18m), so you’ll be able to see the deck topography and partway down the smokestack.

Grand Cayman offers a fantastic opportunity to explore an underwater world full of diverse tropical fish and marine life that you just can’t experience on land.

Have Fun ON the Water Too

Grand Cayman is blessed with one shoreline having a long beautiful beach with calm waters, one with a magical bio-luminescence bay and mangrove forest, and yet another coastline with a significant source of wind. So it’s easy to see why Grand Cayman is considered one of the best places to enjoy Caribbean water-sports. Whether you want to stand-up paddleboard in the calm waters off Seven Mile Beach or in the protected waters of North Sound, or you want to windsurf in the stronger winds along the East end of the island, there’s something for everyone.

Great kayaking can be found all around the island and when the sun drops, you’re in for a real treat! Picture yourself gliding gently through the waters of the bio-luminescence bay near Rum Point, with your boat’s motion making the sea all around you glow an eerie blue – It’s a once in a lifetime experience for sure. Explore the Island by Bike

Cayman Island cycling is a great way to see Grand Cayman and the magnificent Caribbean Sea. There is a variety of cycling route options to choose from, including coastal loops and inland routes that both offer picturesque views of the surrounding areas. There’s a mixed-trail coastal loop just north of Seven Mile Beach, where you can visit attractions such as Hell, Barkers National Park and the Cayman Turtle Farm. There’s also Grand Cayman’s quieter East End – Where there is little traffic, making it an ideal location to enjoy relaxing scenic coastal road routes. Attractions in the area include Nature / Wilderness Reserves, the Wreck of the Ten Sails, a lighthouse as well as rocky blowholes and Lovers Wall. If you’re really looking for a more strenuous route, there’s also a challenging 50 mile (80km) route in the area as well.

Lace Up Your Hiking Boots (or Good Walking Shoes)

Grand Cayman’s Mastic Reserve Trail makes for a fun half-day adventure as you journey on a rustic path through a variety of natural habitats including old-growth dry forest, black mangrove wetland, stands of Royal Palms and Silver Thatch Palms as well as abandoned agricultural land. Take it all in and you’re sure to appreciate the flowers, butterflies and birds, including parrots, west Indian woodpeckers as well as Caribbean doves, that you may encounter. You’ll likely also see lizards, frogs and large hermit crabs during the hike.

There’s plenty of unique and interesting things to do in the Cayman Islands. Here’s a summary of some of our favourite attractions and activities on Grand Cayman Island.

Visit Stingray City

Not far from the northern shores of Grand Cayman there’s a shallow sandbar where friendly Southern Stingrays hang-out. It’s pretty amazing to stand in about 3 to 4 feet (1m) of water with these gentle creatures swimming around your legs. With help from a local stingray wrangler, you can also carefully hold and maybe even kiss one of the pre-historic animals. You won’t ever forget the feel of their soft velvety skin! There aren’t too many places in the world where you can enjoy this “once in a lifetime” experience – Take advantage of the opportunity when visiting Grand Cayman. Want to see what it’s really like? Play a Round of Golf

There’s few better ways to spend a relaxing yet fulfilling day in the Caribbean sun, than by getting on the links for a round of golf. There are two delightful courses on Grand Cayman – Both conveniently located near the island’s capital, George Town. The North Sound Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 71 championship golf course that plays to 6,605 yards and features spectacular views of the North Sound and the Caribbean Sea. The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club offers a Greg Norman designed 9-hole, par 36 golf course that’s also set in an amazing tropical backdrop.

If you like to spend time at sea, you’re in for a real treat at Grand Cayman Island! Enjoy a Day at Sea

For a more relaxing day at sea, sailing provides you with a view of Grand Cayman from a different perspective. See the North Sound and West coast from the sea to better appreciate it’s gorgeous aqua blue waters and beaches. Sit back and enjoy a quiet sailing cruise and if you’re feeling energetic, there is always warm waters at your back doorstep to enjoy swimming and snorkeling. If motor boats are more your speed, you can easily visit a number of the islands’s shoreline attractions in style. If you’re staying overnight in Grand Cayman, a ‘must see’ experience is to gently boat across the glowing blue waters of the bioluminescence bay. Finally, let’s not forget the opportunity to enjoy a romantic sunset, best enjoyed with an unobstructed view over the Caribbean sea!

Venture Into a Cave

Another unique Grand Cayman experience is to venture underground into a subterranean world full of history and intrigue. Explore limestone caves where eerie stalagmites, stalactites and limestone pillars will captivate you… and watch out for the occasional bat. There are literally hundreds of caves throughout the Cayman Islands – A couple of them on Grand Cayman are open to the public. Cayman Crystal Caves, consists of three caves located beneath a tropical forest on the north side of the Island. Meanwhile, on the south/west side of the island near Bodden Town, Pirates Cave is a kid friendly underground tourist attraction.

Horseback Ride Along a Beach

Ever dreamed of riding along a beach in a tropical paradise? If so, make your dream a reality in Grand Cayman. The island’s uninhabited areas around Barker’s National Park provide an ideal location for riding quiet nature trails and un-populated shorelines. Bond with your well trained horse and wade into the sea for a refreshing dip. You can just ford through the calm and beautiful Caribbean Sea or perhaps try riding bareback while your horse actually swims in deeper water. Either way you’ll enjoy calming views of North Sound and Stingray City. There’s daytime rides, sunset rides and even opportunities to ride at night under a full moon!

Spend Some Time in Nature

Looking to slow the pace outside to appreciate Grand Cayman’s natural beauty? If so, you’ll enjoy the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, which features lovely gardens, a lake, a tea house with a wonderful view of natural habitat for birds and the famous Cayman Blue Iguana. If you’re looking to get a little more exercise while you’re getting some fresh air, guided tours are available in the Blue Iguana Nature Reserve’s mile-long forest trail, where you have the opportunity to view the large reptiles in their natural environment. There’s also Governor Gore’s Bird Sanctuary, which has a short boardwalk over a small pond where you can view birds and butterflies, as well as the fresh water Hickatee Turtle.

Then there’s the major ‘nature themed’ attraction on Grand Cayman – the Cayman Turtle Centre & Island Wildlife Encounter. Here you’ll enjoy a number of exhibits and attractions including a turtle breeding pond, a large tank with underwater viewing areas, an aviary (bird) centre, butterfly garden, nature trail and an area that even allows you to swim with the turtles!

There’s also Starfish Point and Rum Point, located on the north-eastern tip of North Sound – A couple of great places to relax away from the more touristy places on Grand Cayman.

The Cayman Islands are located south of Cuba, between Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and Jamaica. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are situated east and slightly north of Grand Cayman.

If you’re wondering how to get to these remote islands, don’t worry – There are daily island hopper flights from Grand Cayman that can get you over quickly and easily. Local Grand Cayman boat operators can also cover the 80 miles (130km) or so of ocean.

Join an Exclusive Club of Scuba Divers

It’s not just a cliché, the Cayman Islands are truly a Diver’s Paradise! The islands are well known in diving circles for pristine sea water with amazing visibility, as well healthy coral reefs alive with marine life. When it comes to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, their remoteness translates into relatively few visitors and almost guarantees uncrowded diving at relatively untouched dive sites!

There are over 60 Cayman Brac dive sites that offer an incredible oasis for divers! There’s easy to access shore diving, shallow reefs brimming with marine life, as well as deep walls and amazing swim-throughs that never get old. There’s also plenty of shipwrecks to explore, including the 330 foot Tibbets (Russian built Navy Ship) with some of it’s guns still in place.

Little Cayman has 60 dive sites of its own, including the world-famous Bloody Bay wall… A steep wall that descends several thousand feet that is home to colourful corals, sponges and sea fans. There’s plenty of rays, barracudas, sharks and large fish to see as well – Little Cayman diving is truly a fantastic experience for experienced and beginner divers alike!

Cave and Climb the Bluffs of Cayman Brac

The Brac is well known for it’s amazing caves! There are a number of accessible and impressive caves on the island to explore including Bat Cave, Peter’s Cave, Rebecca’s Cave, Skull Cave, Great Cave and Halfway Ground Cave.

Prefer to stay on the outside of Cayman Brac’s rocky cliffs, then maybe rock climbing is more your speed. The cliffs at the eastern end of the island seem to be made for Cayman Island rock climbing. There are dozens of routes for expert climbers to explore. With names like Dixon Wall, Neptune’s Lair, North Wall, Love Shack Wall and Tsunami Wall, its a must do for avid rock climbers!

Hike Pristine Caribbean Wilderness

It may be hard to believe, but there are more than a dozen short trails on Cayman Brac. While they’re all relatively easy, some of the more challenging ones include the following:

The 4 mile (6km) long Lighthouse Footpath (AKA The Bluff Trail) pretty much follows the rugged north-east coastline to the lighthouse on the east end of the island. More of a tower than a lighthouse, it stands on the 140 foot (43m) high bluff that is the highest point of the Caymans – Take in the amazing views of the sea towards Cuba.

The mile (2km) long National Trust Parrot Reserve Nature Trail is a short hike that provides the opportunity to potentially see a rare Cayman Brac Parrot. The loop trail goes through a small section of the protected reserve land covering grassed-over farmland, thickets as well as forests where you’ll pass mango trees, cactus and orchids.

The best Little Cayman hiking trails include the Salt Rock Nature Trail which is a 3 mile (5km) round trip requiring a couple of hours to complete. There’s also a good hike between Blossom Village and the north coast where you’ll likely encounter plenty of birds, butterflies, iguanas and orchids.

Cycle Around the Islands, Literally

Cayman Brac’s quiet coastal roads offer amazing sea views and the opportunity to get some really fresh air and exercise! The island’s north and south coastal roads are each approximately 9.5 miles (15 km) long… Plenty of road for you to work up a good sweat.

Little Cayman has a quiet around-the-island road resulting in a nearly 10 mile (16 km) long circuit with few vehicles and un-ending views of the Caribbean Sea! Not sure if it gets any better than that…
